Our
approach in teaching Foreign Languages, is based on the major
points highlighted within the following expressions of our
Rector, Prof. Dr. Tahsin Kesici :
"The
medium of instruction at our university is Turkish. Of course
this is quite normal in a university which was founded by
the representatives of the Turkish labour-force and where
the academic staff and the students are all Turkish. This
is what a scientific thought, which is based upon objectivity
and wisdom, requires. Learning foreign languages is also
another requirement. This will improve communication with
people of other nationalities. For this reason, there is
a Foreign Language Preparatory School in our university.
Our students learn English perfectly through their studies
at this school and through the courses they continue for
four years as a part of the undergraduate program. But of
course, in order to understand cultural lives, science and
thoughts in various countries, and to benefit from them
in a most advantageous way one foreign language is not enough.
For this reason, our students also learn a second foreign
language at TOBB-ETÜ. Thus, young brains are cultivated,
able to acquire data and information from various cultures,
discuss them through group work and synthesize; and then
produce, explore and invent new knowledge moving from these
experiences and facts of our country."
In preparatory year, our students are required to develop the ability to analyze texts and information sources, as well as critical thinking skills and awareness of their own learning styles and preferences. At the end of the academic year, students are expected to be fluent speakers of English, as well as being able to comprehend, analyze and communicate in English both in colloquial and academic settings.
Students are categorized into 3 levels, as A (elementary), B (pre-intermediate) and C (intermediate). The time period of TOBB ETU English Preparatory School for Programmes A and B is one academic year whereas it is one semester for Programme C. The students of programme C sit for Proficiency Assessment Test in December. If they fail in this exam, they join Programme B in Spring Semester.
As a branch of the Foreign Languages Department, German, Russian and Spanish courses are offered as must courses to the students in the 2nd class. Students choose among the options and carry on until they finis their undergraduate study. Therefore, TOBB ETU students graduate from their departments not only as fluent speakers and competent users of English but also as basic users of another foreign language.
